I offered a course, Molecular Aesthetics, in the spring semesters of last and this years. Students are required to build bead sculptures as the final term projects. Last year, a group of six students, 黃正浩,黃兆嘉,黃冠霖,黃愉惠,林汶輝,葉錦德, built together a beautiful model of zeolite MEL. The final structure consists of sixteen helical pentasil chains. Two neighbored chains forms a pair of enantiomorphs. Following my suggestions, students adopted one color for left-handed helices, and another for right-handed helices.
A different group of students this year decided to complete a different zeolite, ZSM-5 (MFI), based on the same helical pentasil chains. The spatial arrangement of helical chains is basically the same. The only difference is the alignment of the chains relative to the neighbored chain along z-direction.
